Le Play, Frédéric

Le Play, Frédéric
(1866-1882)
   engineer, economist, sociologist
Born in La Rivière-Saint-Sauveur, Calvados, Frédéric Le Play was a graduate of the École polytechnique and served as a counselor of state (1855) and senator (1867-70). He also created the Société d'économie sociale (1856). Initiator of the monographic method in sociology, he was the main representative of conservative and traditional Catholicism in France, and sought to reform society by restoring the authority of landowners, employers, and fathers of families. His ideas directly influenced the social paternal movement (paternalism) of the second half of the 19th century. Le Play's principal works are Les Ouvriers européens (1855) and La Réforme sociale (1864).
